Just a few hours now to one of the most exciting races in the calendar, the Investec Derby takes place on Saturday 4th at 4.00 p.m. at Epsom Downs Racecourse in Surrey. With the prospect of two Classic races at the festival, the Oaks and the Derby, it’s not surprising the Epsom course expects to attract the largest one day crowd to attend any sporting event in the country. Established in 1780 by the 12th Earl of Derby as a competition between friends to determine the very best in terms of horse breeding and racing it is one of the most prestigious and coveted prizes in the racing world.

The time of the Derby running is 16:00 (4.00pm) from Epsom Downs

The Oaks will be run on the 3rd June and is open to three year old fillies over one and a half miles of Epsom Downs. Named after a house near Epsom which was leased to the 12th Earl, it is currently one of five British races run during the year, which are designated as Classics. These five races are only open to three year olds with two being reserved for fillies. The British Oaks has inspired many similar events worldwide such as the Irish Oaks and the Oaks d’Italia however the Epsom race is still regarded as the most prestigious. The race is one of three which make up the fillies Triple Crown which also includes the 1000 Guineas and the St Leger.

Although it’s difficult to divert attention from some of the best flat racing in the world, the ladies attending Oaks day might be interested in the ‘Style on the Downs’ fashion competition, which is sponsored by Investec. The competition is open to all Queen’s Stand and Grandstand customer’s and is a great opportunity for fashionable racegoers to impress with their elegant outfits. A good excuse for a shopping spree ladies and don’t forget those little extras such as designer shoes and handbags, maybe a little jewellery and of course the one thing no respectable racegoer would be without…. some headwear!.

Saturday 4th June is Investic Derby Day when the biggest prize money in U.K. racing, standing at £1.25 M, is there for the taking in the race that is ranked as the greatest flat race in the world. The Derby is synonomous with some of the legendary names in horse racing with past winners such as Shergar, Nijinsky and Mill Reef and they don’t get any bigger than that!. This year’s race promises to be as exciting as ever with the names of possible contenders such as Wonder of Wonders and Khawalah already being bandied about.
