Brighton Racecourse
Horse races have been held in Brighton for the last 220 years. The early years of racing had a huge dose of royal influence. Throughout the years, there have been jump races, riots and the occasional fights for survival. Brighton Racecourse has always had a colourful history and its story will continue in the years and decades to come.
Brighton Racecourse is a horse racing course for flat races of up to about one and a half miles. The course is one of three in Britain which is not a circuit (along with Epsom Downs Racecourse and Newmarket Racecourse) and forms a figure like three sides of a square, sloping, with wide left-hand turns and an uphill finish in front of the grandstand. It is 1 and a-half miles in length.
Brighton Racecourse is located in Freshfield Road, Brighton, East Sussex
Big Races
The main highlight of the Brighton Racecourse calendar is the August Festival. The spotlight of the August Festival are the Brighton Mile and Ladies Day.
Race Calendar
Brighton Racecourse typically holds about 20 live racing dates in a year, usually from April to October.
Caution! Horses crossing
When the full length of the course is to be used, some of the grass turf of the track has to be laid over the tarmac at the top of Wilson Avenue, a public road, which therefore has to be closed for the duration of races.
