Huntingdon Racecourse
A tight, right-handed track with some tricky obstacles to negotiate, Huntingdon undoubtedly favours those horses that have the ability to lie handy. The Open Ditch directly in front of the stands provides a real speactacle for racegoers. The highlight of their season is the Peterborough Chase, a two and a half mile contest in November that attracts leading two and three-mile chasers. The course stages 17-20 meetings per year. Another recently introduced race is the Mascot’s Grand National in September, a fun race designed for football club mascots in full costume which attracts national coverage.
The first race meeting in the Huntingdon area was recorded on 1775, mentioning a horse race taking place at the neighbouring Port Holme. However, the racing either did not take hold immediately, as the next record of a racing event is dated 1898, reporting a two-day event in July and another in August.
In 1906 it was decided to move the racing grounds from Port Holme, but it wasn’t until 1920, the year that saw the formation of the Huntingdon Steeple Chase Group, that Brampton became a stronghold of horse racing passion.
