Situated on the banks of the River Tay, Perth is Britain’s most northerly racecourse. Front runners have a particularly good record as the track is virtually flat and the tight bends play to their strengths. Fixtures are arranged to suit the tourist industry taking place between April and September with the highlight being the Perth Festival in late April.
As Scotland is hailed as the unofficial home of National Hunt racing, it is not surprising that races staged in the Perthshire area can be traced back as far as the 17th century. While there is ample reference to races taking place at the Inch in Perth – there is evidence that an annual Perth meeting was taking place – ‘proper’ racing, in accordance with the Jockey Club rules, was not introduced until 1908.
