Plumpton Racecourse
A very sharp, undulating, left-handed track of one mile, one furlong in circumference, Plumpton provides a real test for both horses and riders. Based on a clay surface, the ground can become particularly testing during the winter months where its uphill finish often plays an important role in the outcome of races.
Interestingly Plumpton Racecourse was intended originally as a venue for ‘coursing’, the forerunner of today’s greyhound races. In coursing two dogs would give chase to a hare and the dog bringing down the prey would be crowned the winner. This form of sport was practised at the site of Plumpton Racecourse from 1876 to 1884, when the first horse race was staged and overwhelmed the sport of coursing with its mass appeal. In the early 1900s, the course staged one more attempt to establish itself as a successful coursing venue – while also hosting horse race meetings – , but finally abandoned the idea for good in 1908.
Plumpton Racecourse is located in Plumpton, East Sussex.
