Pontefract Racecourse

Set in West Yorkshire, Pontefract is one of the most popular tracks in the north of England and produces many course specialists. Being a stiff, undulating two-mile track, the emphasis is firmly placed on stamina in the staying races but front runners are ideally suited to this track in sprints where an inside, low draw is important.

A lot of the early history of Pontefract Racecourse is speculative. There are reports of an alleged race meeting on the 5th October 1790, as well as some inconclusive evidence of a three-day race meeting in 1801. However, it is not until 1802 that there is definitive information about racing at Pontefract.

In 1802 Pontefract pioneered the rules of race course conduct by selling what more or less amounted to lifetime membership to the course and admission to all races to members in possession of a ’20-year badge’. This scheme funded the racecourse’s first Grandstand.
