Ripon Racecourse

Set in the Yorkshire Dales, Ripon is an undulating course with a long five-furlong run-in that has proven a very popular track with locals and tourists alike. The highlight of their year is the Great St Wilfrid Handicap, one of the leading sprint races of the season, which takes place during August. One of the most attractive racecourses in Britain, the course delivers a lively and friendly atmosphere ideal for families.

The Ripon area has conducted organised horse racing events for over 300 years, with the first record of equine competition dating back to 1664. The races were held first on Bondgate Green, followed by a number of different locations for the events. Ripon gained a reputation as a major horse racing force.

In 1900 Ripon Racecourse moved to its current location at Boroughbridge Road, and has been an important fixture on the racing scene ever since. Home of a proud Racegoers’ Club since the 1960s, Ripon Racecourse was voted ‘Best Small Racecourse in the North’ in 2003.
