Sedgefield Racecourse
Set in the tranquil Durham countryside, Sedgefield has built a strong reputation for a relaxed and friendly day out at the races. A tight track with fairly sharp bends, this is not a course that suits the long-striding galloper but when the ground is rain-softened, the steep, uphill finish rarely fails to come into play. Eleven of the course’s 22 fixtures take place on Tuesdays.
Sedgefield Racecourse began its career under the name Melton Of The North, when the track was opened on its present day location, which then was part of the Sands Hall Estate belonging to the Ord family. The Ord family, who would keep control over the racecourse until the 1920s, and staged the inaugural meeting in 1846. They continued to host an annual fixture every March.
The racecourse ceased sporting activity during World War I, but was swiftly reopened in 1920. When Richard Ord, the last of the Sands Hall Ords, passed away shortly after the reintroduction of racing, the course was taken over by County Durham, who announced three annual fixtures. When the Racecourse Company was established in 1927 and took horse racing matter into their capable hands, the popularity of the sport skyrocketed and created the need for 20 annual fixtures. Since this development, the Sedgefield Racecourse has undergone a series of renovations, ensuring it can keep up with its richer cousins when it comes to facilities and flair.
Sedgefield Racecourse is located in Stockton-on-Tees, Cleveland.
