Stratford Upon Avon Racecourse
One of the most popular country tracks, Stratford-on-Avon Racecourse attracts many visitors, particularly for the summer meetings. The highlight of the season is the two-day Intrum Justitiia Meeting in June which features the Intrum Justitia Cup, one of the season’s principal hunter chases. With a triangular circuit to navigate, the majority of successes are achieved by those horses that like to race up with the pace.
Racing at Stratford got off to a shaky but enthusiastic start. In 1755 horse racing was staged and officially recorded on Shottery Meadow in the town of Stratford-Upon-Avon. In 1769 the same location hosted the Garrick Jubilee Cup. However, as the meadow was in fact an actual meadow, racing was presumably banned in order to keep the wildly pounding hoofs of the contenders from destroying the local crops. For almost a century, no more racing was recorded in the Stratford area.
However, in 1836 a National Hunt race was once again officially conducted and made it on the record. The equine sport began a long and tedious climb to make a space for itself at Stratford. In the mid-1800s, racing was gaining popularity and Stratford hosted a number of well-attended meetings, including the Shakespeare Cup (naturally), the Warwickshire Hunt, the Diamond Jubilee Cup and the Warwickshire Hunt Coronation Cup. National Hunt racing was well under way.
Stratford Upon Avon Racecourse is located in Warwickshire.
