Uttoxeter Racecourse
A vastly improved racecourse in the last ten years, Uttoxeter has re-invented itself as one of the UK’s most progressive tracks. The quality of racing has also improved immeasurably with the Midlands National Meeting in March attracting many top-class performers. Front runners often do well here given the twists and turns the runners have to negotiate.
Uttoxeter Racecourse has travelled a long and rocky road to get to the solid state it is in today. It was opened in 1907 to replace Keele Racecourse, which had recently been forced into closure. The beginnings of Uttoxeter Racecourse were auspicious, it had five meetings in its first year and an attending crowd of mostly noble and upperclass spectators. However, the outbreak of World War I put a stop to the races all over the United Kingdom. In 1921 Uttoxeter resumed racing and once again drew good crowds – now across all social classes – and provided great quality racing.
It was the period after the second World War that really threw Uttoxeter out of its rhythm. While most courses in the country ceased operation during these testing times, Uttoxeter Racecourse had a harder time than most to get back on its feet. This was not due to the war itself but to an unrelenting farmer who refused to renew the racecourses lease to a section of his land, nor was he willing to sell. It was only at the last minute that Uttoxeter Urban Council decided to fund the purchase of the famer’s land and save the racecourse from ruin.
Uttoxeter Racecourse is located in Richmond, North Yorkshire.
