Wincanton Racecourse
Although Wincanton does not have the same profile as the major National Hunt tracks, it offers a high standard of sport. Front runners are particularly well suited to the steeplechase course as the three fences in the short home straight, give hold-up horses little time to recover lost ground. The racecourse is particularly well attended on the Festival Trials Day in February and their Boxing Day fixture.
As hunting was a favourite past-time of the Somerset region, it comes as no surprise that the Wincanton area is credited with hosting the first ever National Hunt Steeple Chase even in the United Kingdom in the 19th century. At Hatherleigh Farm near Wincanton the National Hunt committee conducted a series of steeple chases between the 1860s and 1913.
Racing was suspended first during World War I and again during World War II. However, in between in 1925, Wincanton Racecourse was moved to its current site at Kingwell Farm, although the inaugural race did not take place until 1927.
Wincanton Racecourse is located in somerset.
