Worcester Racecourse
Situated on the banks of the River Severn in the city centre, Worcester is one of only six courses that offers racegoers the opportunity to witness National Hunt racing throughout the summer. Often used by trainers to introduce their better novice hurdlers and chasers, the course rarely fails to attract decent-size fields and therefore delivers competitive racing.
The tradition of horse racing has deep roots in the Worcestershire area, dating back as far as 1718 when flat races were hosted along the banks of the River Severn. The sport quickly rose to great popularity and by 1755 the first annual flat racing fixture was established on the site we now know as the Worcester Racecourse. In the same year Worcester hosted its first jump race meeting in autumn. For over 200 years flat racing dominated the racecourse at Worcester; however, since 1966 Worcester Racecourse operates as a National Hunt Course only.
The Grandstand still in use at Worcester Racecourse today was built in 1974; summer jumps were introduced in 1995. Steadily, Worcester Racecourse was building a reputation as an innovative and progressive racing venue. However, it was not until 2000, when Arena Leisure took charge of the management of Worcester Racecourse, that the racetrack underwent the care and the refurbishments to make it the outstanding racing facility we know today.
