Epsom Downs Racecourse
Epsom Downs racecourse is located in the County of Surrey. The course is famous for staging the ‘Derby’, the UK’s No.1 thoroughbred horse race for three-year-old colts and fillies, over a mile and a half.
1779 saw the first recorded race meeting to be held on the Downs and one of today’s greatest sporting spectacles was established. In 2009 the the new Duchess’s Stand opened. With a capacity of 11,000 it can be used for banqueting, conferences and exhibitions.
Other notable races held at the course include the Epsom Oaks and Coronation Cup. Epsom Downs is probably the most unusual and testing Flat racing track on the planet, the twelve-furlong Derby trip provides a roller-coaster ride, most notably the turn into the most famous bend in racing, Tattenham Corner.
In 2006 a multi-horse finish rivalling that of 1913 as the closest ever. In a four-way photo, Sir Percy beat Dragon Dancer, Dylan Thomas and Hala Bek a short-head, a head and a short-head.
In 1913 suffragette Emily Davison famously threw herself in front of King George V’s horse at the Epsom course.
